Life in HKUST (Part III)

If you think that the amount of food post in my blog is too much, brace yourself, this post is about the food I've tasted in HK.

I think I'll just have to mention this again and again : I am so damn god grateful to have a local hongkee friend here in HK to guide me to every must-go-spot in HK. Because of this, I am able to feel the very local HK experience to the max !!
Of course not to forget some of my new friends I met in HK. Mostly are Mainland Chinese and Malaysian  from NUS, only one or two are Singaporean.
Everyone of them are SO daring and adventurous.
With the spirit of "not afraid of getting lost in a foreign place" to explore around HK, carrying a backpack and walk with them for a whole day can be really fun !

I've tasted so much of local yummy food from the first day I stepped in HK until the last day, carried a big bouncy belly back to Malaysia.

All kind of Dim Sum, you name it.
Breakfast stall in Hang Hau

The best Dim Sum ever in HK.
In a Michelin 1-Star restaurant 添好运
Specially thanks to Andy's family

The fast food in HK

Everytime you travel to another place, you mustn't miss out McDonald
As mentioned earlier, there is a McDonald inside the campus.
The menu is not much different with the one in Malaysia.
This is Pork McMuffin.

Seafood Rice Burger
How cool ! Instead of using bread, they use rice. And instead of chicken patties, beef patties or pork patties, this is seafood !
In a popular fast food stall in Hang Hau shopping mall

Dim Sum is too popular in HK. So here comes the Dim Sum fast food.
Where you just have to make order like "drive-thru" at the counter and just get it at the other side of the counter within a minute.
In Hang Hau shopping mall.

Besides Dim Sums, Honkees love to eat dessert (tong sui)..
Fruits are too boring for Hongkees to be considered as a kind of dessert. Guess what? They have a 4~5 pages of dessert menu in every long-queue dessert shops in every small streets in HK.

The Yin-Yang Soup (or paste? I don't know how to name it)
Very thick viscosity of Black sesame and Almond bowl
In HK's Tong Pak Fu (different from Malaysia)

Tau Fu Fa in Lam Tsuen near Tin Hau Temple in Fong Ma Po Village.
Malaysia's tau fu fa add brown/white sugar syrup for flavouring. Tau Fu Fa in HK add ginger syrup and raw cane sugar. Yellow sugar makes the soft Tau Fu Fa with an additional unique crispy taste.

Jelly made from Chinese traditional herbs
In 添好运

Hot bowl of almond steam egg in Jordan Street
Very soft texture and the taste is just perfect !
(forget about the two models from Mainland China)

6 different flavours of Tong Yun
We waited 1 hour for the queue at this small dessert shop in Jordan Street

The following will be the random food in HK. Since I don't know how to categorise them.

In a Michelin 1-star restaurant in Tsam Tsui Po
The taste, okay okay only lah. Not really worth the money we paid.
HKD100 (about RM40) per person for a group of 12

Si Chuan style frog
The name of this dish in Chinese is quite misleading cause 水煮田鸡 looks like it's quite plain.
But this dish is really spicy ! Quite nice though !

Tai Fu Tai Mansion for lunch: Ping Shan Traditional Basin Dish (Pun Choi)
Look at how big is the portion !
A table of 13~15 still can't finish this basin of dish!

The famous Wan Tan Mee in Jordon Street. Tasty ! The noodle is a little bit harder than I thought it would be.
This small bowl costs HKD30 (RM12) .. expensive !

First time taste Chao Tau Fu in Mong Kok.
Not as smelly as I thought, but it's a bit too oily for me to chew. I threw it away after a few bites eventually.

Wife's cake in Yuen Long Hang Hiong factory.
Love it !
In case you don't know the story behind it : Wife's cake is invented in Soong Dynasty by a poor guy. This guy is sick and his wife decided to "sell" herself to earn money for the medication of her husband. After recovered, this guy invented this cake with winter melon and almond to earn money and "buy" back his wife. So this wife's cake is named after it.

Fresh and hot little egg puffs in Mong Kok. Crispy outside and soft inside. Love it !!

Si mut milk tea in a famous kopitiam (茶餐厅) in HK

Polo Bun
Crispy upper layer and soft bread

Pork Burger

Chicken chop instant noodles
Instant noodles is very popular in HK. Every kopitiam in HK have instant noodles and they name it 公仔面 which sounded very cute.

Simple breakfast in Yuen Long

Pork burger in a Portuguese restaurant in Yuen Long
Totally love it !

The best Portuguese egg tart I've ever tasted.
It's still hot when it is served. Love every bite of it!!

Okay, I guess this is it.
Those food I've tasted in HK.
Don't feel weird, I actually capture photo of every of my meal, which makes me look like a typical-attention-seeking teenager.

But I don't care lah, cause everytime the food is served, I will think of my blog.
I want them to be on my blog as a memory in case I got alzheimer's disease in the future.
Not sure is there anymore post about my life in HKUST.
Read Aziana's blog post here : Click me !
New semester coming soon in 2 weeks. Have to slowly set my mindset back to "challenge" mode.
Anyway, stay reading !

I am Otaku : Studio Ghibli films

I am not a big fan of anime.
I don't like anime with over hundreds of episodes. It is very difficult to catch up with every episodes and some of the storyline will get far more ridiculous than the first time you watched it.
In fact I actually can count the number of complete episode of anime I've watched.

Digimon version 1 and 2 (the best anime of all time),

Full Metal Alchemist,

Fate Stay Night,

Inuyasha,

and Ragnarok.

There is no reason why people don't like anime.
Anime can narrate story with better interpretation.

Anime is all about imagination.
Story and action is beyond the thing that what normal life can be achieved.

I love author who can create something that is very abstract and still manage to pull out the inner artistic side of an audience.
And that is the reason why I am addicted to films from Studio Ghibli recently.
I am really impressed with every film from Studio Ghibli.
They are really good in delivering story to the audience.

I watched Spirited Away (my personal favourite),

My Neighbour Totoro,

Kiki's Delivery Service,

The Cat Returns,

Howl's Moving Castle,

and Ponyo.

Love it love it love it !
And every original sound track of every studio Ghibli films is also very impressive.
The rhythm is just so sentimental, and since we don't understand the Japanese, it is the best choice to turn it on to relax your mind.

Personal recommendation (OST from :)

Spirited Away

Howl's Moving Castle

The Cat Returns (Fish Leong's 小手拉大手)

I haven't turn 21.
So it is still legit to post cartoon pictures on my blog.
Here I go again, showing another geeky side of mine.
#kthxbye

Life in HKUST (Part II)

I believe I had gained some weight when I'm back from HK.
In HKUST, they have almost 1 restaurant in every floor of the whole campus.
Chinese and western restaurant, cafe, McD, high class bistro and bar.
Look at the menu in one of the stalls at the food court !

Menu on a BIG board

I have to spend almost 10 minutes to think of what to eat before order the food. Not to mention to plus the time to remember the name of those food. Those foods on the list are normally very long and complicated to speak in Cantonese. ><’’
All the foods in the campus are not that expensive. Around HKD25~30 (RM8~RM12) for every lunch/dinner. The portion of each plate of meal is very big. I believe with this portion corresponds with the cost, it’s not expensive after all. I am not sure why hongkee can eat so much, even the girls. But you can hardly find a fatty in HK. I believe because they walk a lot. That is why they eat so much.

Believe me, those foods are delicious !
Not anything like the food in UPM campus.

Order chit

Counter to collect the food

Food court

Delicious !

Damn it ! I am hungry now !

Love it !!

AHHHH!! miss those food !

Okay I'm becoming more lazy recently.
I don't wanna make my HKUST story to hang in the middle though.
Anyway, here's one of my friends who went for this program also.
You guys can read her story here : Aziana's HKUST life
Her version is much informative lah ~
But don't forget to come back to read my blog after reading hers. (I am afraid of losing my reader HAHA)

Stay reading... !!

Lemon Custard

This time we tried new thing again.
LEMON CUSTARD !!
Lemon custard !

Lemon custard is a thick, soft cream that has a wonderful sweet and sour citrus flavour. It can be used as spread for bread slice and filling for tarts, pies, and cakes.

Ingredients :

  • 4 lemons
  • 3 eggs
  • 100g of butter
  • few tablespoons of sugar

Fresh lemon juice

Butter

Easiest ingredients you can get in any supermarket !

Method :
1. Whisk all ingredients together in a professional stainless steel saucepan bowl.
2. Cook in medium heat and keep stirring until it thicken. (10 ~ 15 minutes)
3. Add few tablespoons of sugar and taste it.
4. Continue to stir and cook until very thick.
5. Pour them into a jar and let it cool down. (if possible, strain it first for smoother result)
6. Refrigerate for 4 hours.

Add few tablespoons of sugar

DONE !!

Note :

  • Make sure to scrape the bottom of pan while cooking so that the curd thickens evenly without burning the bottom. We burnt the the curd at the bottom of the pan. It will appears chao ta.
  • Add more sugar if you think the lemon is too sour.
  • Buy a better quality of unsalted butter. Don't buy chap pu long brand if you want your lemon custard to taste and smell nice. Trust me. If you know what I mean.

Stir stir stir

So, you are once again ready to prove to your parents you can open a bakery shop in the future.
Will upload more DIY confectionery in the future. Stay tuned !!
